There was a time, long ago, when there was no magic. People fought with weapons made of substance, walked to get to places, and died when killed. Then the Madness came. Earthquakes unleashed bizarre elements, the like of which have never been seen since. Those who came near the elements were taken over by them and changed. In those days, chaos reigned. Creatures of freakish design raided villages, and men possessed by the powers fought amongst each other for the right to be called leader. It was during these times of combat that the Wasteland was created, providing the ages with an example that magic was to be feared.
But one day, a glorious ruler arose. His was the power, not to destroy through magic, but to stop those who were terrorising his people, what would later be known as “anti-magic”. It was through our King that the Madness ceased, and order came back to our continent. Magic was permitted, but only within reason. People with similar “gifts” banded together and formed the three Houses. From the three Houses, the First King chose his counselor, a warrior filled with the most capable magic, next to the King’s. Each House strove to have the honor of this position, which has encouraged enmity that lasts to this very day, especially now. The last Counselor has recently deceased in a mysterious manner, leaving an empty space for the King to fill.
The Houses are:

Look, fellows. All of us have roleplayed before. We're all intelligent people. I won't say we're all mature, but we know what not to do. Nevertheless, I'm typing this up. Who knows, it might even prove useful!
1. All rules that apply to the blog apply here. A full list of said rules can be found at www.swordsoflight.wordpress.com/rules/
2. Please, please, please don't do anything excessively outlandish or powerful. It really just ruins everyone's fun. You might as well crash into a party with pepper spray.
3. If there's an argument being held, use this sub-forum. Is this obvious? Yes. Is it worth repeating? Yes.
4. This is intended to be a fantasy roleplay, at least for the most part. We should just be running into the gunpowder era. Some basic gunpowder weapons should be available, but they will blow up in your face just as often as function correctly.
5. This place has intentionally relegated NPCs to the background. We're going on the umption that any of our characters will find NPCs to be pointlessly squishy. If there's a fight, they're dashing around whacking things; they just can't affect the player in any way. Use them for scenery, if you like.
6. The actions of the King are to be determined by a majority vote. Keep in mind that any open fighting will draw the ire of the king, as the contest between houses is officially perfectly peaceful. Unofficially, of course, do whatever you like. Just make sure it's behind several sets of locked doors. Public combat will most likely result in the exile or execution of the character in question.
Regulations for Creating Characters
1. No more than one PC per person, please.
2. Only humans are Gifted. Thus, anyone belonging to a house must be more than half human in origin. Elves and dwarves also have magic, but the human blood would interrupt those paths to power. Put in plain terms, elves and dwarves do exist. However, any character must still be part-human.
3. Even though a Gift is hereditary, it doesn't necessarily need to be the exact same sort as the house in which you belong to. After all, the bloodlines would have been mixed fairly frequently. Nevertheless, the stated power would be the most powerfully manifesting, and any different powers should be related to the original. Variations, if you will.
